POTS Syndrome — A Functional Approach to Dysautonomia

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a complex autonomic nervous system disorder that causes debilitating symptoms. Our functional approach works to identify the underlying drivers and restore autonomic stability through safe, natural protocols.

What Is POTS?

POTS is a form of dysautonomia — dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system — characterized by an abnormal increase in heart rate upon standing. It causes a wide range of symptoms including dizziness, fainting, extreme fatigue, brain fog, palpitations, and exercise intolerance. POTS has become increasingly common, particularly following viral infections including COVID-19.

The Root Causes of POTS

POTS is not a single disease but a syndrome with multiple potential underlying causes — autoimmune dysfunction, mast cell activation, small fiber neuropathy, hyperadrenergic states, hypovolemia, and connective tissue disorders. Identifying your specific subtype and underlying drivers is essential for effective treatment. Our functional approach goes beyond symptom management to address these root causes.

Our Functional Approach to POTS

We run comprehensive testing to identify the specific drivers of your POTS — autoimmune markers, mast cell activation, nutrient status, inflammatory markers, and autonomic function. We then build a customized protocol addressing each driver with safe, natural interventions including dietary modifications, targeted supplementation, hydration strategies, and lifestyle modifications. We work alongside your other treating physicians to provide comprehensive care.

Common POTS Symptoms

  • —Dizziness and lightheadedness upon standing
  • —Rapid heart rate (tachycardia)
  • —Extreme fatigue
  • —Brain fog
  • —Exercise intolerance
  • —Fainting or near-fainting
  • —Nausea
  • —Temperature dysregulation

Underlying Drivers We Investigate

  • —Autoimmune dysfunction (autoantibodies)
  • —Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS)
  • —Small fiber neuropathy
  • —Hypovolemia and electrolyte imbalances
  • —Nutrient deficiencies
  • —Post-viral syndrome (including Long COVID)
  • —Connective tissue disorders (EDS)
  • —Gut dysfunction and dysbiosis
